Three Things I've Learned In My First Year As A Digital Marketing Freelancer

Updated: Aug 30, 2022

Happy Business Anniversary to me! One year into my freelance life and I'm reflecting on my learnings and achievements because time flies when you're busy building a business.

What a year it's been! So much to learn and so much coffee to consume but one thing stayed the same: my search for the ideal work set-up. Below I'm sharing the three things I've learned in my first year as a digital marketing freelancer, in the hope that they may be useful for some of you.

So let's get started.

1. You CAN have it all

Depending on what you define as 'all' but for me it is being able to balance my personal life and my career in a healthy and sustainable way. To me, freelancing wasn’t a step backwards but more a step forward to working more independently and freely. Being able to work from anywhere in the world brings me so much joy and fulfilment and is my ultimate work-life-balance.

2. Being my own boss is great

I’ve always wanted to be my own boss, make my own rules and be part of the decision process. Growing up with two small business owners as parents, I always thought there was more to my career than what I did. Despite having reached management level in my previous job, I never felt like I was actually involved in the decision-making process. Now, I am the decision maker, creative head, admin and accountant in one- an exciting, fun and really fulfilling journey for sure.

3. Freelancing can be lonely

Of course, every achievement also has its downsides and to me it’s definitely been hard being on my own 80% of the time. To combat freelancing loneliness, I actively seek out opportunities where I can meet/see other people: co-working spaces, the gym, cafes etc. It takes a lot of willpower but it’s so worth it.

Finally, I'd like to say a huge thank you to all my clients in the first year. Without your trust, I wouldn't have been able to make this my happiest and most successful year to date.
